Leap Fear: Overcoming the Anxiety of Starting A Business

From the Cubicle to Non-Profit

My heart rate rises, and I get really excited when someone says “I have this business idea.” A friend had an idea for a nonprofit to support girls. During our usual talks, she decided to share her idea with me along with all the things she had already done to prepare.

As our conversation continued the next thing I said was: “This idea is great! You can open your non-profit now! Let’s break down all the things you need to do to launch.” Then she said what many budding entrepreneurs say: “But.” “But, there’s still a lot of things I need to set up first.” My next question to her was “Like what?”

This is a common scenario when I work with clients who have everything set up but afraid to push the button to become official. “Leap Fear” sets in, they hyperventilate and literally want to run from their destined path. Clients get overwhelmed with their thoughts and give up trying to start planning for their business. This is all before they actually figure out what really needs to be done. For my friend, we began building on the work she had already started -- research, creating programs, finding marketing vendors and vetting potential board members. I started working with her on outlining the next action steps for launching her non-profit. We followed up weekly on completed actions to track her progress.

Seeing completed actions catapulted her to overcome her fear, giving her the confidence to apply for 501(c) 3 status. She later launched GirlSpeak with committed board members and students along with programs and initiatives to begin serving the girls enrolled in her program. When GirlSpeak launched it had enrolled 8 young women, today it has 18.

Are you lost in trying to create the perfect business?

I often encounter prospective clients who feel they need to have it all together before they hire me as a business coach. This is contrary to the whole concept of business coaching! 😊

The question I always ask potential clients is “Are you ready?”

This simply means, are you ready for the journey ahead? My approach is not just focusing on profit, it’s digging deep to find out what you truly want and creating a vison for you and your business.

Your mindset can’t be focused on perfection. It must be focused on your purpose.

Everything else (i.e. profit, social media, leads, etc) will follow once you have a clear vision on where you are striving to go in life and with your business.

Some people are afraid to post, to register their business, or even uncover what’s really happening to their business to find out they could have fixed the leaks and cracks before it got worse.

As a business coach, I am here to guide you and give support along way. Don’t get stuck in "Leap Fear" being perfect. You'll miss out on a lot of opportunity trying to do something that is unattainable.

Instead focus on purpose, clarity, efficiency, sustainability and progress.
